“Japan Taxi” the new shape of taxi in Japan 日本のタクシーの新しい形「ジャパン・タクシー」

Every country has the taxi business. So do Japan. But the services and cars are not the same across the countries. Basically roads are narrow in Japan. So there is the regulation that defines “Small Car” that enables various benefits financially (tax, toll fee, etc.). The small car cannot have the width wider than 1,700mm. And all the basic taxi body has the width under 1,700mm.

The basic shape of the taxi has been orthodox “Sedan” type from long ago like this. And there should be one important feature for a Japanese taxi. It is “Remote manipulated rear door”. This is one of Japanese “Omotenashi” (hospitality). The driver will open the rear door for the passengers in Japan.

タクシーの形状は昔からオーソドックスなこのような形の「セダン」タイプばかりでした。また、日本のタクシーには重要な機能がひとつ必要です。それは「オートドアー」。 これは日本の「おもてなし」の一つであり、 日本のタクシーでは乗客の乗り降りに際して運転手が後部ドアを開閉します。

It is okay to get in for one or two passengers to this conventional taxi. But it is very tight for three or four passengers because of the restricted car width. So TOYOTA produced “JPN taxi” which has box-shaped taxi in 2017. This tall and box type shape enables to have more room even if its width is under 1,700mm.

乗客が1人か2人の場合は、この従来型タクシーでも問題ありません。 しかし、3人または4人乗車の場合は、車幅が制限されている従来型タクシーでは窮屈感が高くなります。 そこでトヨタは、2017年に1.5ボックスタイプの形状の「JPNタクシー」を新開発しました。このトール1.5ボックスの形状により、幅が1,700mm未満であっても、広い室内空間を確保できます。

This car has very big luggage space. So it is the better choice to take this JPN taxi for the passengers with large luggage such as foreign visitors.

この車には非常に大きな荷物スペースがあるため、外国人旅行者など、大きな荷物を持つ乗客にとっては「ジャパンタクシー」を利用することがより好ましい選択でしょう。

In addition, taking advantage of the large interior space, this JPN taxi allows wheelchair users to get into the vehicle without folding the wheel chair. And the rear door is “Powered slide door” which is very convenient at the narrow space.

また、大きな室内空間を生かして、この JPN taxi では、車いす利用者が、そのまま車内に乗り込むことができるようになっています。後部ドアは「電動スライド式」。狭いところの使い勝手が良くなっています。

Japanese taxi industries have been vigorously increasing this type of taxi cars toward TOKYO Olympic 2020.
